SUCCESS STORY #3 | Field Operational Tests (FOT): Real-World Data Driving Safer Automated Mobility
Real-World Testing for Human-Centric Automated Mobility
BERTHA is leading the way in Connected, Cooperative, and Automated Mobility (CCAM) by executing extensive Field Operational Tests (FOTs). These hands-on trials capture the full spectrum of real-world driving conditions and behaviours, providing the essential data needed to develop and validate BERTHA’s advanced, human-centric driver behavioural models. Through this commitment to authentic testing, BERTHA ensures its solutions are not only innovative but also practical and reliable for everyday mobility.
Diverse Data for Robust Model Calibration
To date, BERTHA has completed 16 FOTs using sensorised vehicles across a variety of use cases. These tests have successfully captured a wide range of driver profiles and complex traffic scenarios, including challenging manoeuvres and interactions. The project’s commitment to data diversity is evident in its use of two different type of vehicles, providing a strong foundation for model calibration and validation.
Advanced Analytics for Performance Assessment
A key highlight of BERTHA’s FOT program is the integration of Python-based KPI analytics. This enables project partners to visualize and assess performance across 19 different metrics, supporting data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement. These analytics ensure that every aspect of driver behaviour is measured, understood, and optimized for safer automated mobility.
Setting New Standards in Safety and Reliability
As BERTHA reaches its ambitious milestone of completing 40 trials included in the FOTs, the project is setting new benchmarks for safety, reliability, and human‑centric design in automated mobility. The insights gathered from these real‑world trials are invaluable for calibrating and validating the project’s driver behavioural models, ensuring they capture the realities of everyday driving and contribute to the next generation of CCAM solutions.
